Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Last year, I became the sponsor of our school's Agriculture Club. I realized quickly that we did not have enough of the proper equipment to support the children properly. I would like to provide more gardening and agriculture equipment and tools to our AG Club resources in order to support the students in the club learning about agriculture, life cycles, weather, and teamwork.

What will be done with my students

This year, 12 third and fourth grade students participating in AG Club. Students will use the gloves and hand tools to weed and plant plants in the flower beds at our school that are a border for a common play/activity area for our school. The AG Club has already started weeding and preparing the beds for additional plants. We would like to plant cool-season plants this year in addition to planting plant in the spring. The children will use the tools to maintain and develope the beds. In addition to tending the garden, I would like the students to monitor and record the weather. This supports their learning about plant cycles and the plants' needs for growth and development. I would like them to monitor the weather using basic and digital tools so that they can compare the accuracy of both methods. I would also like to add composting to our activities this year so that the students can learn about plant decomposition and soil nutrition for plants. We maintain the beds not just for fun and learning, but also to give back to our school. Last year the students created a "rainbow garden." This year we will be creating a "sensory garden" that classes can visit and interact with.

Benefits to my students

Students learn in real life what they are learning in their science class. They are able to apply the knowledge that they have or will acquire in academic classes and from reading books. AG Club activities include all the areas of STEAM and support creativity, hard work, teamwork, and philanthropy. They learn skills that they can use now and for the rest of their lives.

Budget Narrative

Hand tools, gloves, water hoses and nozzles, the wagon will be used to maintain the garden. The weather monitoring system, rain gauge, and thermometer will be used to record and compare data, and it provide information to aid in plans and decisions for our garden (planting). The composting bins will be used to make compost for the garden and students learning about plant needs, life cycles, and soil composition.
