Goal

Children are meant to move, and the purchase of flexible seating will have a significant impact on student achievement by creating a classroom environment that supports focus, engagement, and individual learning needs. Currently, my class average percentile rank is 65% below grade-level in Math and 62% below grade-level in Reading, which shows that many of my students are performing below grade-level expectations and will need additional supports to be successful. Flexible seating will provide students with the opportunity to choose a workspace that best fits their learning style whether that means sitting in a traditional chair, standing, wobbling, or using a cushioned floor seat. This choice helps students feel more comfortable and in control of their learning, which leads to increased motivation and academic growth.

What will be done with my students

Students will be given the opportunity to choose a learning environment that best supports their individual needs. When my students' needs are met, they are more engaged, focus, and ready to succeed. Each day, I teach a class of 17 students, self-contained, in whole group, small group, and independent settings, and flexible seating will provide them with a variety of options to help them learn in the way that works best for them. These seating choices will serve as a valuable learning tool, giving students the freedom to move, wiggle, or fidget as needed without distracting others. By promoting comfort and choice, flexible seating will help all of my students stay on task, take ownership of their learning, and make greater progress toward academic success.  

 

Benefits to my students

Flexible seating will be beneficial to my students because it will increase their focus, engagement, and accountability in the classroom. By allowing students to choose seating that best meets their academic and behavioral needs, we will gain back valuable class time that is often lost to redirection or repeated instructions. Students will feel more comfortable, take greater ownership of their learning, and be more responsible for their choices. My goal with flexible seating is for students to complete class assignments within the allotted time frame for each subject area, with minimal need for redirection. To measure success, I will use a simple tracking system: a daily checklist with each student’s name and three quick columns—On Task, Needed One Redirect, and Needed Multiple Redirects. This will allow me to quickly note behavior patterns without taking away from instructional time. I am always looking for fun and engaging ways to keep my students interested while actively learning, and flexible seating will help me accomplish that. With the support of this grant, I will be able to add multiple seating options that will not only benefit my current 17 students but also continue to support any students who may come to my room for tiered interventions that need the use of flexible seating to be successful or be motivated to learn and engage.

This will be purchased on Amazon for a total of $1000.00
