Goal

The purpose of this project is to enhance the speech and language development of Pre-K through 5th grade students at Palmetto Elementary School (PLE). At PLE, we serve students in a variety of special education programs, including Pre-K disabilities classes, Intensive Behavior Intervention Classes as well as Modified Curriculum Classes, in addition to our general education students in Pre-K through 5th grade. This grant request addresses the diverse speech and language needs of our early learners, including articulation, vocabulary development, sentence structure, comprehension and social communication. Integrating engaging, developmentally appropriate materials and games into therapy sessions will help keep students interested in learning and on task. By incorporating play based learning, this project supports both therapy goals and overall academic success.

What will be done with my students

This project will provide a variety of interactive materials and educational games specifically chosen to target key areas of speech and language development. Activities will be tailored to each student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals or specific needs with a focus on articulation practice, vocabulary development, syntax and grammar development and social language skills supported by role playing and cooperative games. The use of academic games will increase student engagement, promote generalization of skills in the classroom, and allow for natural, meaningful communication activities. Therapy sessions will be more fun and interactive, encouraging student participation and consistent progress. 

 

Benefits to my students

As a result of this project, students will demonstrate measurable improvement in their targeted speech and language areas, increased motivation to participate in therapy, and greater carryover of skills into academic and social settings. 

 

Budget Narrative

These items will be incorporated into therapy activities for our pre-k to 5th grade students within the our self contained special education classes as well as for students in general education. All materials and games will be used to support each student's IEP goals to help them become more successful, confident communicators and will improve their academic success.
