Goal

My goal is to offer a wide variety of seating options in my classroom to enhance the engagement of all students. 

 

What will be done with my students

I would like to be able to offer my students flexible seating in the classroom. Flexible seating supports different modes of learning, which is why students are more likely to stay engaged. Studies show that students take more ownership of their classroom when they have the ability to choose their own seats, especially if seating location is an important factor in their learning. In the 4th grade, students find it difficult to sit in the gathering area comfortably. Research shows close proximity to the students allows teachers to be more involved in the learning and students feel as though they are a part of a learning community. I would like my students to be comfortable enough to maintain the level of engagement necessary to take ownership in their learning. 

 

Benefits to my students

Allowing students to choose where they sit and learn in the classroom enables them to feel in control of their education. It empowers students to think about how they learn best and urges them to be more strategic with their choices.
Children need to move. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. 

 

Describe the Students

I work at a Title 1, 100% free/reduced lunch school. I have 20 students with very diverse backgrounds. Currently, I have 4 ESE students, 3 gifted students, 2 504 students, 5 ADHD students.
