Goal

IMy goal is to increase my students' fluency reading rate and accuracy, reinforce positive student behavior, and increase and reinforcestidemt attendance.

What will be done with my students

Students will be given Legos and time to build and create with Legos as a reinforcement for increasing their fluency reading rate, for coming to school, and for making positive behavior choices. Students will have opportunities to earn and collect Legos each day. They will have time to work with the Legos they collect or with kits each week, also. My students will begin keeping data on their fluency reading rate. They will receive a Lego for the number of words they increase their rate by. If their rate goes up from 46 to 58, they would receive 12 Legos. Students can earn Legos for participating in class, helping fellow classmates, and for going to school, also.

Benefits to my students

I have two classes of 20 third grade students that I provide instruction for in the area of English Language Arts. I have a total of 40 students. My first class has a reading fluency average of 57 words per minute (wpm). My second class has a reading fluency average of 69 wpm. Third grade students should have a reading fluency rate of over 134 wpm in the first nine weeks in order to function or score in the 75 percentile or higher. They should have a reading fluency rate of 166 wpm by the fourth nine weeks in order to be in the 75 percentile or higher. Students must be a fluent reader in order to understand the text. Students are motivated by fun and games. This is a great way to reward them with something tangible that they can then turn around use to build and create. They can literally see their progress each time they look in their Lego container and graph. They will also get time to build and create with Lego kits and with bricks. Kids love to build and create and it is good for them. So, this plan gives them that opportunity , incorporating STEM, along with impacting their reading. The main goal however is to help make them successful readers.

Budget Narrative

The LEGO bricks would be used to reinforce students that increased their fluency reading rate.
