Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

As part of a biomedical science course, students will learn the process of suturing wounds. They will use the Apprentice Doctor How to Stitch Wounds Suturing Kits to learn this technique with the same tools medical professionals use to suture. This is an important skill for students plan to become medical professionals. It is also a great opportunity for students to learn about the process of surgery, wound care, the anatomy and physiology of skin, and the importance of sterile technique when working with patients to prevent the spread of disease.

Students at our school have the opportunity to take the Biotechnician Assistant Credentialing Exam (BACE) through Biotility at University of Florida Center of Excellence for Regenerative Health Biotechnology. Graduating high school with a BACE certification allows students to directly enter the biomedical profession as a lab assistant, or if they are continuing their education at a post-secondary institution they will be very well-prepared for lab and research opportunities. The BACE includes a paper-based knowledge assessment and skill-based practical component, in which students must demonstrate their ability to perform specific laboratory tasks. Having access to the proper equipment in lab is a critical component of preparing students for this exam and their future careers as biomedical professionals.

What will be done with my students

Thirty third-year Biomedical Science students (Juniors and Seniors) will complete this lesson on suturing every year. Students will complete a lesson on the procedure of stitching wounds. The lesson will begin with a student-led inquiry activity of the situations in which stitches are necessary – wound care, surgery (internal and external stitches). Students will take notes on the structure of the skin, the functions of different layers of skin, and how skin wounds heal. Then they will watch instructional videos on how to use the Apprentice Doctor How to Stitch Wounds Suturing Kits to suture wounds. Each student will then have the opportunity to practice suturing, first on a banana (the skin of a banana is a very good starting practice for human skin), then they will move on to suturing the simulated human skin in the Apprentice Doctor How to Stitch Wounds Suturing Kits.

Benefits to my students

This grant will be used to purchase 11 Apprentice Doctor How to Stitch Wounds Suturing Kits for use by 6 lab groups of 5 students. Student mastery of suturing technique will be evaluated using a rubric. It is very important for students to experience being graded on their ability to perform a specific lab technique as part of the biomedical science program.

For their first practice suturing the banana, students will self-grade their results and grade their peers using the rubric. This allows them to clearly see which areas they have mastered and which they need to work to improve. Once they have practiced and feel proficient with banana suturing, they will be graded by the instructor on suturing the simulated human skin. Students will also be assessed at the start and end of the lesson on their knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of human skin with particular reference to how skin wounds heal.

Biomedical students also complete and End of Course assessment each year through the curriculum our school uses. This assessment shows whether students have mastered the specific content areas covered in each course.
