Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Lely High School has not had a theatre program in over 15 years. This year we are reigniting a passion for theatre among our students. We are starting a Theatre 1 and 2 class as well as a Drama Club. This is an opportunity to open the world of theatre to students who may have never seen a play or been exposed to all that there is in a theatrical production. Our beginnings are exciting yet very humble. While we do have support from the district and local theatre professionals, we have a need for some basic theatre supplies: texts, monologues, tech theatre materials, makeup, and various other elements. I bring semi-professional training to the course, but the tools are needed. This is a wonderful opportunity to draw back the curtains and share the spotlight with students who have performance histories and those who only look on with wonder.

Goal

What will be done with my students

These students will learn all aspects of theatre: play performance, history, memorization, improv, and collaboration. They will also learn many aspects of technical theatre: sound, lights, costuming, set design, set construction, stage management, and stage/special effects make-up. The goal this year is to have monologues and vignettes be included in the holiday fine arts show. Then, in the spring have a Cabaret Night, followed by a night of one acts later in the year. As this is the first year, in over 15 years, we need to begin small and grow our program and our talent. There is much to do and much that the students can do, if only given the opportunity.

Benefits to my students

Theatre is "a whole new world." As someone with a theatre background, I can't imagine never seeing a play or reading a script; however, this is the case for many of our students. Not all of our students are athletes or academics, they find their outlets in creative ways. For them, the theatre may be their safe place. I now have the privilege to provide that. These students will learn things that will push them out of their comfort zones and stretch their "character." They will learn that the sky is the limit, and with the right words - they can become whomever they choose to be. They can literally write their own stories. This is merely the first chapter.

Budget Narrative

Since the school has not had a program in a number of years, there are no theatre specific supplies/materials at school. The available texts are from 2004, and nothing more current is accessible. The texts are to begin our reference library for teaching and training purposes. The monologue and play books are to begin teaching the students memorization, characterization, blocking, and stage performance. The makeup kits (in a variety of skin shades) are so that students can be taught and trained in all aspects of stage makeup from realistic age-appropriate to more technically challenging elements: mustaches, beards, scars, etc.
