Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Many students struggle with reading comprehension, which carries over to multiple subjects. This year, I want to focus on Reading Comprehension and tie that skill to Math. If a student struggles to process what they read, they struggle to understand basic math foundational skills and decipher what a math word problem is asking. By providing my students with math center materials and high interest books, I feel that they will readily use the comprehension skills from one subject to aid in the processing of complex math word problems. As a fourth-grade teacher, with the necessary items in the classroom, students will begin to grasp skills and concepts, not only for math, but reading as well. This will create an engaging learning atmosphere where students are encouraged to explore while learning. It is my goal to see an increase, not only in STAR Math, but STAR Reading as well.

Goal

Many students struggle with reading comprehension, which carries over to multiple subjects. This year, I want to focus on Reading Comprehension and tie that skill to Math. What will be done with my students

As our students progress from year to year they are required to gain knowledge and master multiple standards across the board. Florida standards slowly progress by grade levels to ensure that students leave one grade level with the knowledge to succeed in the next grade level. Unfortunately, not every student arrives with the foundational skills that allows them to be successful. If granted materials to add to Math Centers and books to our library, I will integrate them as much as possible when aligned with our math or reading standards. Students will be allowed to check out the books in our classroom library, as well as use the math maniuplatives in centers. Some of the items chosen will also be used whole group as read aloud or a whole group math activity.

Benefits to my students

Currently I have 18 students: 11 in the classroom and 7 ILDA. Every student would benefit from having Math Centers and books. One main benefit is that students learn to work independently, without the teacher’s assistance. I have found that students seem to doubt themselves when working with the adult. When working with peers, they are more likely to step out of their comfort zone. It is my observation throughout the years that students learn better when they are given engaging activities to work with other students. As students work together, they begin to feel more confident with a trusted partner. This working relationship helps students acquire immediate feedback from the learning partner and corrects any misconceptions they may have about the subject or concept.
