Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

My students are diverse. Our world is diverse. We need books that reflect that in our classroom and in the hands of our students. My goal is to ensure that students see themselves in the characters of stories: as the astronaut, as the hero, someone who looks like them, someone who looks different than them. I hope to expose them to different mindsets, cultures, customs, countries, abilities, family dynamics, and more! Through this, my goal is to build character, understanding, inclusion, confidence, and knowledge in my students. This project will support the national “We Need Diverse Books” initiative and open so many doors for my students and their families!

Goal

My students are diverse. Our world is diverse. We need books that reflect that in our classroom and in the hands of our students. My goal is to ensure that students see themselves in the characters of stories: as the astronaut, as the hero, someone who looks like them, someone who looks different than them. I hope to expose them to different mindsets, cultures, customs, countries, abilities, family dynamics, and more! Through this, my goal is to build character, understanding, inclusion, confidence, and knowledge in my students. This project will support the national “We Need Diverse Books” initiative and open so many doors for my students and their families!

What will be done with my students

We will read these stories together as a class, have class discussions and meetings on these topics, role play (where appropriate), and devise tasks together to build understanding of these topics. Through these books we will build our comprehension skills as well as real world experience and character. They will learn empathy, equity, and so many other imperative lessons that are also part of the 2nd grade social emotional curriculum and character education traits. I hope to share these books with all of the 2nd grade classes and refer back to them when the situation is appropriate.

Benefits to my students

My students will benefit tremendously from this project! It will foster their love of reading as well as their self-love and love for others. They will see themselves reflected in these stories as well as learn about "others". It is imperative for us to be global citizens who are knowledgeable, understanding, and respectful of the world around them. Having access to diverse books with characters who look, speak, act, see things differently (or the same!) as them will open their eyes to a world of possibilities! I anticipate hearing, "I can do that because X did that in the story and X is just like me!" or "I understand why X did that in class, because Y did that in the story and X said they're feeling just like Y was". And I can't wait to have those learning moments with my students.

Budget Narrative

These books would provide diversity in race, gender, socio-economics, culture, customs, religions, ability levels, immigration, acceptance, thought processes, and so much more! I can't wait to share these experiences with all of the 2nd graders at Pinecrest! Thank you for your time and consideration.
