Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

My goal is to provide my special needs students an opportunity to be exposed to current events by using Scholastic News, a current event magazine for kids. This would include Scholastic News, Science Spin and an interactive edition, perfect for our interactive whiteboard, classroom computers/ IPads and features a video, learning game, a read aloud option and much more. Scholastic News and Science Spin will be used to enhance and support the Modified Unique Curriculum that students are engaged in daily.

What will be done with my students

My special-needs student will have their own copy of Scholastic News/Science Spin beginning in Sept. 2019- May 2020. Students will have their own Scholastic Folder where they will keep each monthly copy. Each monthly addition will be used in guided reading groups and throughout a variety of science lessons. The final goal is for students to develop and present their own classroom science project to share with their peers at the end of May.

Benefits to my students

The benefit to having this current event magazine available for my students would be very unique and motivating. Many of my students do not have access to any news source. They are not aware of many of the current events that happen throughout the country/world. This year our school theme is Go For The Gold. Most likely, Scholastic will feature the upcoming 2020 Olympics in Japan. All of my students would benefit from Scholastic. I would share my experiences using Scholastic with other Modified Curriculum teachers.

Budget Narrative

The budget includes a copy of Scholastic News (1st grade), Science Spin and on-line access for each, for 12 students in the Modified Curriculum lll, 4th/ 5th grade classroom. It also provides a teacher copy with suggested resources to be used in the classroom that support common core/access points.
