Goal

Our goal is to immerse students in a comprehensive program teaching real-world skills of self- sustaining gardening. We will incorporate STEAM as well as aspects of social studies using our existing school garden which consists of nine raised beds.
 

What will be done with my students

Our students will partner with UF Master Gardeners to build a viable vegetable garden. Students will learn by having hands on experiences about parts of seeds, and how to germinate and plant seeds. Students will plant the vegetables, and will monitor the growth by measuring and graphing weekly. Students will make predictions, hypothesis, and follow the scientific process to determine their results. Also, the students will harvest crops, experiment in tasting the crop, and prepare a meal using the vegetables they have grown.
 

Benefits to my students

Research shows that students who engage in school gardens show significant gains in overall grade point average, specifically in math and science. Learning how plants grow can teach a lot about sustainability and the importance of caring for the environment. Our garden will offer a unique experience for all ELH students including our ELL and ESE students. Our students will start by learning the value of growing your own garden. They will benefit from the shared knowledge of the Master Gardeners' vast knowledge. They will learn about life cycles including, germination, and pollination, and the essentials of light, water, and nutrients. Another extension will be exploring the fiscal aspects of crops. Including the concept of Farm to Market, and learning about crops as Profit. The students will develop skills to nurture and accept responsibility for living things including their own health. Students will study healthy food choices and gain lifelong understanding of the benefits of these healthy choice.

 

Budget Narrative

The tiller will help insure that the garden project will continue for years to come.
The plants and potting soil will allow for a full fall growth cycle, and seeds can be planted indoors during February for a spring crop.
