Goal

My grant request is to further build upon the Gifted programs at Yulee High and Fernandina Beach High School. Students will be exposed to studying history through art and literature. They will explore, analyze, and develop skill sets that challenge their critical thinking through the art making process. The goal is to provide high quality lessons and to encourage and push students to excel in the humanities disciplines.  

What will be done with my students

My students will be studying art through the ages. They will be focusing on historical contexts and how visual artworks and literature define a cultural time period. In doing so, students will have the opportunity to learn history by making artworks that coincide with the time period they are studying. Students will create art that reflects what historical time they are learning about. Specific art projects will include but not limited to: Map design and creation. Students will study maps of the world and learn about the earliest maps created by the earliest explorers. Students will learn about world cultures and individual explorers including the Chinese, the Norse, Europeans and how their explorations have impacted world exploration and settlements.
By this study, students will invent their own country or choose a current location to draft into a map.
This will challenge student's perception of history, culture, geography and math skill sets. Another project includes students creating mathematically based draft designs of buildings by studying the time of the French Revolution and learning about the construction of Versailles. Students will further explore the age of the Industrial Revolution, the period of the Enlightenment and the Victorian Age. Students will study specific artists and writers and composers from these time periods and create works of art in their personal sketchbooks. 

Benefits to my students

This grant will benefit Gifted students at two schools: Yulee High School and Fernandina Beach High School. The Gifted students will be benefited by these art lessons and curriculum in many ways. Students will be challenged academically in that they will not only study the history of a particular time period, but they will study the art reflected from that time. By doing so, students will have an opportunity to create a personal artwork reflecting a similar theme from their studies. Students will gain the experience to create art. This experience is not only a very personal one but it does demand high quality problem solving skills. Students will sharpen their skill sets, their confidence and self-esteem by creating art. The act of art creation is one that will be demanding but also calming. Students in the gifted program often take all rigorous courses in their schedule. They do not often get the opportunity to take other art courses. Their minds are constantly being challenged in a certain way each period, but coming into the gifted class, where they are challenged in a way that reflects their own creative output allows my students to gain confidence in themselves and acts as a catalyst for helping them mentally and emotionally. Students will also build their analytical and problem solving skill sets due to the nature of the art making process. They are given parameters for projects and must create a plan in how they will execute the plan. Allowing students to create artwork on larger paper and also in their personal sketchbooks, will allow variety and keep their interest level high. Students will be able to take their personal sketchbooks home with them to further work on assignments as well as keep it once they graduate. In addition, working with higher quality materials, students will be able to produce high quality, long lasting works of art that we can place in art exhibitions in the county and regionally including the Art and Writing Scholastic Art Competition which previous Gifted students won awards for the Gifted art works. This will further boost student commitment and interest in art making when they have another outlet to create and share their work with an audience. Thank you!! 

Budget Narrative

Students will use a variety of art materials to create high quality works of art. I plan to purchase materials from Blick Art Supplies (online) and Michael's' Craft Stores (in person).
