Goal
The goal of this grant is to give struggling readers (lower quartile students) in 6th grade access to high interest, age-appropriate, leveled (instructionally appropriate), non-fiction texts (Max Axiom Graphic Science Readers) that excite them so that they make learning gains in comprehension and academic vocabulary.
What will be done with my students
The 6th grade ELA team will use these Science texts to aid in differentiating our instruction, for extracurricular reading activities outside the classroom, and tutoring. Because these texts are age appropriate and high-interest, they excite 6th graders with topics like "A Crash Course in Forces and Motion with Max Axiom" (which aligns with SC.6.P.13, investigate and describe types of forces including contact forces and forces acting at a distance, such as electrical, magnetic, and gravitational) and "The Basics of Cell Life with Max Axiom" (which aligns with SC.6.L.14.3, recognize and explore how cells of all organisms undergo similar processes to maintain homeostasis, including extracting energy from food, getting rid of waste, and reproducing.) These leveled texts engage struggling readers. In addition, the topics of these graphic readers align closely with the 6th Grade Science standards and allow students to practice non-fiction reading strategies in the Science content area. Due to their standards aligned content these texts could be used in Science classes as well as in Language Arts classes.
Benefits to my students
The benefit of these texts in the classroom will be measured by increased student engagement and the associated additional practice of non-fiction reading strategies that all lower-quartile students need. By using non-fiction reading strategies with highly engaging texts, students' reading comprehension will improve in the classroom and on the FSA.
