Goal

The goal is to provide new TAP students with uniforms so they will feel confident and look professional as they gain employment skills through community based learning experiences. Life skills such as personal hygiene, shopping and clothing care will also be developed to gain greater independence.

What will be done with my students

As part of Nassau District's Transitioning Adults Program (TAP - 18-22 program) students with significant needs are enrolled in Career Experience Courses where much of their curriculum is working in the community. With support from school staff and our business partners they learn employment skills to prepare for paid employment.

The students have a personal hygiene check list that is completed each morning before going in the community. They are responsible for making sure their uniform is clean, wrinkle free and they are well groomed.

With guidance from school staff, they will be actively involved in the purchase of their uniforms to ensure correct size and fit and to learn these important life skills.

Benefits to my students

Because of financial restraints, many of our students are not able to provide a uniform with their own funds. Providing uniforms grant will help students have a sense of pride as they work in the community and allow them to learn life and employment skills in the process.

In addition, having a consistent uniform for the program adds immediate recognition in the community and a professional representation of our students and Nassau District Schools.

Budget Narrative

We will be able to use the many of the work shirts and jackets the grant provided last year. Thank you! Due to normal wear, several shirts will need to be replace. The bulk of the grant request is for uniforms for our new students. In addition to the printed shirts, they will need work pants as well as shoes, belts and hats. Except for the printed shirts, most items will be purchased at Wal-Mart for economical pricing.
