Goal

To engage students by doing their own learning using 3D "Getting Nerdy" paper dissections that will capture their interest and lead them to an interest in a career field of Marine Science or other STEM fields. Students will be involved by doing hands on paper dissection experiments without the physical side effects such as the smell of chemical preservatives and/or the visual aspects of actual dissections. 

What will be done with my students

Students will be working hands on while observing, creating, exploring, learning, discussing, and presenting their 3D paper dissections of aquatic species. The 3D dissections of the anatomy models will also be used as a study tool and summative assessment for comparative anatomy. Students will be able to identify and explain the structure and function of the internal and external anatomy of ocean sea creatures such as sharks, squids, starfish, crayfish, clams, sponges and perch. The lesson also includes a PPT presentation for each sea creature with instructions in addition to the printable colored handouts.

Budget Narrative

Most dissections have to be ordered from distant science supply companies with restricted access to the general public and must be delivered to a school location. Actual dissections are not being supported financially anymore from the district of CCPS and must be funded by grants. Due to recent red tide and other issues a lot of dissection species are not currently available. For example, starfish are currently on back order from Carolina Biological until September 2019. Dissections last for only one procedure and must be disposed of properly. With paper dissections I would have access to the pdf file and could print for an indefinite period. Using this program for three years would benefit over 630 marine science students. For better identification purposes a color printer, additional ink cartridges and card stock would be needed for the paper dissection program to continue to succeed for at least the next three years.
