Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

My goal is for each second grade student to have the opportunity to have a butterfly habitat in their classroom where they can watch, write about, and learn the four stages of the lifecycle of a butterfly. Watching the actual progress of the butterfly, rather that just to read about it in their science books will help them to internalize their learning.

Goal

My goal is for each second grade student to have the opportunity to have a butterfly habitat in their classroom where they can watch, write about, and learn the four stages of the lifecycle of a butterfly. Watching the actual progress of the butterfly, rather that just to read about it in their science books will help them to internalize their learning.

What will be done with my students

Students will research butterflies and find out what kinds of butterflies there are. They will also research what they eat and where they live. We will set up a butterfly garden in each second grade classroom. The students will witness the caterpillar building its cocoon and then emerging into a butterfly. They will also learn what butterflies eat and will release the butterflies into our Global Garden when the butterflies are ready. Students will track the progress of their butterfly garden in their Science journal. Each student will be actively engage in watching and journaling each stage of the butterflies lifecycle.

Benefits to my students

This will benefit the students by giving them the responsibility of taking care of the caterpillars and eventually butterflies. Students will learn the life cycle of the caterpillar and how they become butterflies by watching through their own eyes in their own classroom.

Budget Narrative

Our Second grade classrooms will each have a butterfly habitat cage. This grant will supply each classroom with 10 caterpillars, food, and all the supplies that our students will need to observe the four stages of the
butterfly lifecycle.
