Goal

If you read a child a story..they will want to hear another. If you read another, they will want to hear more and be hooked. Soon they will be eager to read a few words on their own. Not long after, they will develop the thirst to read more and more. My goal is that line of thought for all of my students. Under standards LAFS.1.L.1.-3.6 and LAFS.1.RF.1.1-4.4, students will gain a stronger understanding of the English language through grammar and fluency practice. These standards require students to understand the English language through conventions, grammar usage. These standards also require students to understand print concepts as well as spoken words and phonemes.
Students must have the English language modeled to them often to better acquire the nuances of it. My desired outcome would be to make a 50% gain in my students' fluency skills by the end of the 2017-2018 school year as measured by running records as well as Rigby leveled readers. I would like to increase student's reading levels (per Rigby) by at least 5 levels each.
I think that through this grant, a listening center would be a great aide to students who are unfamiliar or learning the English language as well as my students who are beginning readers. Through hearing a model of fluent reading daily and practicing through read alongs as well as comprehensive checks, I think that my students' reading skills will improve significantly.
Many of my students are in need of constant modeling. By listening to a fluent reader, this model will provide them with correct grammar usage, correct pacing, pronunciation and tone.

 

What will be done with my students

I currently have eighteen students in my classroom that will be impacted by this grant. 22% of my students are English language learners and approximately 60% of my students are classified as beginning readers.
This listening station will be used as a center activitiy. It will be used with my future students as well.
My students will be asked to listen to the read-aloud story and track the words/read along (if-able) while listening.
Once the story has been read, students extension activities will be based on their ability level. My high readers will be asked to summarize the story using complete sentences. My middle students will be required to respond with a focus on the grammar being taught at the time. My early readers students will be asked to rate their level of enjoyment of the book as well as their explanation for their rating. The activities will take place in the classroom and be completed independently (at times with assistance depending on child's ability level.) 

Benefits to my students

This project will be evaluated through multiple avenues,
My children's STAR Reading reports will indicate their reading growth from beginning this station until the end of the school year. I also will track my student's speed and fluency through running records. Furthermore, their comprehension will be tested through weekly AR tests on the book provided at the listening station.
All students in my classroom will participate in this station. I will be the teacher facilitating this activity.
Future students will participate in this activity with the same guidelines and tracking.
