Goal

Our class room currently has one working student computer. We would like to get 5 laptops! With this grant we would accomplish engaging and appropriately challenging small group stations. Using online math programs, my students could review for their state exam using a variety of independent practice with video and example support. Last year, half of my students loved the online programs available; however, we struggled to find open computer labs in the second half of the year. The other half would have benefitted from just working with me in a small group. Having 5 laptops in the classroom would allow us to break into small groups more often. Last year 30 percent of my students met their Khan Academy (online math skills program) goals. With access in our classroom, I'd imagine we could double that participation this year. 

What will be done with my students

This grant would positively impact AT LEAST 120 7th grade math students per year. In math class, small group instruction is most effective; however, it is challenging to keep a class full of below grade level students engaged independently while I take a small group. There are many exciting online programs that would benefit my lower learners and keep them motivated to stay on task. Because I can assign specific standards to specific learners through these online programs, I could be sure to appropriately challenge each of my students individually. If a student finishes classwork early, they can quickly and easily work on their Khan Academy (online program) goal by going on a computer. They could also check their grades online to make sure they are submitting all required assignments. They can view the "ShowMe" videos I make to go with each homework assignment and lesson. These laptops would be used anytime anyone has extra time at the end of class or on a designated station day where we break into small groups and rotate through various activities every 15 minutes. 

Benefits to my students

With 40 percent of my students test below grade level on district and state exams, all students could be challenged at his or her independent level with programs like Khan Academy and Path Blazer while I can work with a small group building more personal relationships and identifying their specific needs. Students would be able to check their grades in their free time or view the homework help videos I create and post on my website. Never again would a student have to wait for other students to finish an assignment. They could move right on to their next challenge and continue learning and growing.
