Goal

To increase math achievement on the FSA through the supplemental use of ST Math.

What will be done with my students

Students K-5 will use the ST Math computer platform in the following ways:
• In class centers K-3 for 20 minutes per day
• whole class computer lab time for 30 minutes per week
• before school daily intervention- 30 minutes targeted at lowest 25% 4th and 5th grade according to FSA data
• After School Intervention for 3rd,4th and 5th grade- 16 weeks, 3 days per week with 90 minutes per week ST Math
• K-5 teacher led lessons using the ST Math puzzles to build interest curiosity and problem solving during classroom math instruction
• K-5 accessing ST Math at home

Benefits to my students

ST Math is a visual instructional program that builds a deep conceptual understanding of math through rigorous learning and creative problem solving to engage, motivate and challenge K-5 students toward higher achievement. ST Math starts by teaching the foundational concepts visually, then connects the ideas to the symbols and language. With visual learning, students are better equipped to tackle unfamiliar math problems, recognize patterns, and build conceptual understanding. Without language barriers, the problem is accessible to all students, regardless of skill level or language background.

Avalon Elementary currently has 72% of students that do not speak English at home. ST Math bridges the language barrier allowing equal access to math concepts.

ST Math benefits every level of student: struggling students grow to become proficient, while proficient students become advanced. Over 200 visual games create a unique pathway of interconnected content challenges to provide differentiated instruction for individual students, regardless of skill level. The very experience of solving tricky puzzles is motivating. In doing so, students develop perseverance and grit that drives them to take on the next challenge with enthusiasm. ST Math is a standards-aligned program that creates opportunities to move away from digitized math drills and puts students in the mindset to think creatively. Challenging games help kids explore non-routine problems and build number sense.

Avalon Elementary used ST Math during the 2016-2017 school year in the following ways:
• students scoring in lowest 25% for 4th and 5th graders on the FSA participated in an after school tutoring program using ST Math for 90 minutes per week
• 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in a before school intervention 3-4 days per week at 20 minutes per session
• Kindergarten during pull out intervention for 20 minutes once per week
• Third grade used ST Math during centers at 60 minutes per week
• 3rd, 4th and 5th grade teachers used ST Math puzzles to introduce lessons.

ST math had an impact on Avalon's FSA data, and following is math data which compares 2016 test scores to 2017.
Math Proficiency increased from 34% to 61%
Math Making Gain increased from 33% to 47%
Math Lowest 25% increased from 22% to 51%

Budget Narrative

Last year Avalon Elementary purchased ST Math with CCPS permission using Title One funds. Sadly, our Title one budget was cut. ST Math single student licences cost $26 per student. We are asking for $4 per student ($4 X 500) to help us cover the deficit. As our data shows, ST Math did bridge the language barrier for our students. It allowed all students to grow as mathematicians. Funding this program would be a wonderful gift for all 500 students, and we predict our achievement will continue to soar.
