Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Are Cryptids real or make believe? I teach a Read 180 class and several World Cultures classes. I have had 208 students this year and plan to teach the book twice for the next several years. In the past I have taught this book and students loved it. My books are so tattered that I am ashamed to have students read out of them. I will need 35 copies at $6.99 each. I purchase a lot of the books that we read in class but, it would be nice to get some free!

Goal

Are Cryptids real or make believe? I teach a Read 180 class and several World Cultures classes. I have had 208 students this year and plan to teach the book twice for the next several years. In the past I have taught this book and students loved it. My books are so tattered that I am ashamed to have students read out of them. I will need 35 copies at $6.99 each. I purchase a lot of the books that we read in class but, it would be nice to get some free!

What will be done with my students

I use Rowland Smith’s curriculum plans from his web site (@jdprague “06). This book will take 5 to 6 weeks to complete with a research project included. This unit includes a student package (40 pages) and a teacher’s package with vocabulary that is useful to understand the book.
We begin with Front-loading Vocabulary and anticipation Adventure (before reading), using Elements of Literature: character traits, role play, setting, plot, theme, and more. Idioms are throughout the book, predicting, and three types of questioning, writing and research. Students will work in groups as well as, individual stations. I also have several books with pictures of cryptids students really love.

Benefits to my students

I have also had students create a model of a tree house from the book. This is a fast pace novel with excitement on every page. I want to later create an archaeology dig for the school for science, history, and language arts or anyone who wants to share it. Students will love having hands on digging like the STEM projects. Students will keep a composition book portfolio with their assignments in it.
I like to maybe hope that some of the cryptids may be found like Big Foot or the Lock Ness Monster.
What an adventure this book will be for 6-8th graders!

Budget Narrative

My classes are elective classes and are large, so I need 35 so everyone will not have to share and I will have a copy to help read aloud. This just covers the books, I will cover any additional materials needed.Thank you so much!
