Goal

The goal I have for my students is to learn the importance of coral restoration in regards to saving our oceans and actively participate in growing various species of corals.

What will be done with my students

Students will participate in the growth, maintenance, and sampling of various species of corals by making measurements of their growth, graphing it, and taking pictures.

Benefits to my students

Students will learn classification, animal physiology, aquaculture, and animal husbandry. This can lead to students gaining employment in local pet stores and field techniques for futures environmental work for undergraduate and graduate studies.

Budget Narrative

We have two tanks that we have now set up for the marine biology course. With our original tank having taken off with over 40 different thriving species of corals, we added a second tank in which we have continued the growth of corals along with a touch tank setup. The lighting system we currently have is simply not strong enough to continue the coral growth. By changing the lighting system, we could essential double our corals. To keep the algal growth to a minimal amount, we need certain types of vegetarian fishes (wrasses, tang, box fish) along with some invertebrates (crabs, snails, shrimp), thereby allowing proper coral growth.
