Goal

The goal of this grant is to replace the broken cymbals and continue rebuilding the percussion inventory for the FBHS performance bands. Because of the high cost of percussion instruments it is one instrument group where the instruments used are provided by the school and not supplied by the individual students. Over the next five years much of the broken and worn percussion inventory will need to be replaced. Many funding resources will be required to address the overall need. Replacing the cymbals first will have a great immediate impact on performance at a budget price. 

What will be done with my students

Beginning summer 2017 students will be supplied with essential pieces of equipment necessary to set the cadence and rhythm for performance. There is a distinct musical sound produced by the cymbals. Over time the instrument will crack and the ability of the instrument to produce a musical tone is diminished. They will also be trained in appropriate technique to prevent damage of the new equipment. With proper instruction these cymbals will be used for more than a decade. This will provide immediate improvement in instruction for students and performance quality for the band over all. 

Benefits to my students

Improvement in percussion equipment benefits all of the Fernandina secondary bands. The percussion section is central to every marching performance. The percussion section is even placed center field driving the rhythm of the performance. It is also a central element to all community performances and the many parades and performance evaluations held here in our community. Replacing the broken equipment also shows pride in our organization and our students, giving them proper equipment to excel musically. Band is a year round activity, highly visible in the community and around the state and region. This investment will help the students, the band and the school for many years to come. 

Budget Narrative

Budget request is for Zildjian cymbals at a total cost of $999.90 for two sets of cymbals to be purchased from Woodwind Brasswind, wwbw.com. We would need an additional $1489.85 to complete the set of cymbals we need for adequate competition. 2 ​Zildjian Stadium Medium Cymbal Pair 16" at 414.95 each, and Zildjian A Classic Orchestral Medium Light Crash Cymbal Pair 20" at $659.95
