Goal

Increase student understanding of the Civil War in general and Florida’s role specifically by taking 30 to 40 students on a one day trip to visit the reenactment camps for the Battle of Olustee, which was the largest Civil War battle in Florida.

What will be done with my students

16 February 2018 is the opening day for the reenactment weekend. The day is dedicated to educational visits by various schools. The students will have the opportunity to wander the camp, meet and visit with the reenactors and attend seminars relating to the event.

These dedicated people live in the manner of the war, using only tools and materials available at that time. Students can receive hands on experience with medical, engineering, tactics, weapons, and other issues of the day.

Benefits to my students

This project has not been attempted before. It can be adopted as a model for all the high schools in the county. Experiencing firsthand the life of a Civil War soldier is by far preferable to reading about it in the text.

This event is deeply connected to the curriculum as FBHS offers not only US History classes but also a dual enrollment Florida History course (AMH 2070).

Budget Narrative

The costs are a best estimate at this time. Additional costs (to be absorbed by the school/student) include lunch and admission to the event. This is estimated at $15.00 per student.
