Goal

To use Break Out Boxes in all grade levels and subject areas to strengthen problem solving skills, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and listening skills.

What will be done with my students

Each Department (Reading, Math, Science and S.S) will receive a Break Out Box to be used with students in the classroom. Students have to work together and unlock clues to find out what is in the box or to solve a mystery. The class works together on this and has a time limit to complete the task. After mastering the Break Out Box the students will learn how to create challenging lessons and Break Out Boxes to be shared with other classes.
Timeline:
April-Grant Approval
May-Order Breakout boxes from BreakoutEDU.com
Summer-Reading Coach becomes familiar with Breakout Boxes-their content and how they align with standards.
August-Reading Coach will train Department Heads using Breakout Boxes at the Faculty Meeting.
September-December:Create schedule for each class to have the Breakout Box for a week. 40 classes, 4 boxes, 10 weeks. After completion- Trade boxes among departments.
January-May: Begin creating classroom Breakout Boxes aligned with standards taught. This concept can be permanently integrated and used year after year with all students at Yulee Middle School.

Benefits to my students

These boxes provide unique, engaging, subject specific challenges that require groups of students to work together to complete tasks and complex problems. The content is tied to what they are learning in class. After completing the Break Out Box there is a decompression session where the students self reflect on their team work, cooperation and collaboration skills and compare and contrast which were the easiest and what they need to work on. By the end students feel a sense of accomplishment and teamwork.
40-50 teachers and 970 students will benefit from this request.

Budget Narrative

Kits for each Department will be ordered and given to the Department Heads. Department Heads will create a schedule so that all classes in their department have access to the Break Out Box Activities. After completion, boxes will be traded across the curriculum. There are short videos on Youtube that show teachers and students how to create their own Breakout Boxes using grade level and subject level standards.
