Goal

The goal of the Teen CERT program is to provide young people with the skills they need in order to preserve lives, property, and the environment in a crisis situation. In Nassau county CERT is a volunteer arm of the county emergency management agency.

What will be done with my students

The program provides 30 hours of instruction (and community service) in search and rescue, fire safety and suppression, first aid and triage, natural and induced disasters, leadership and team building skills, and disaster psychology. Instructors are drawn from local fire and sheriff’s departments, supplemented by CERT instructors. Once training is complete the team is ready to respond to events not only on campus, but throughout the county. CERT across the nation has been a force multiplier to the local emergency manager in times of disaster. Roles have included; searching for lost hikers, organizing sand bag brigades in flood areas, managing food and water distribution points, light search and rescue, and damage assessment form natural disasters.

Benefits to my students

Each student is provided with safety vest, helmet, gloves, first aid and other supplies. The purpose of the grant request is to bridge the gap between what is provided by federal, state, and county and what the team member needs to function as part of a search and rescue team.
Currently there are 12 students and two faculty members involved. This project is sustainable over time with new members being recruited as other members graduate.
This is the first CERT team formed in the country and can serve as a model for the other high schools. The first class of Teen CERT will complete it’s training in April 2017.
