Goal
To provide nonfiction readers for teachers to use in small groups
What will be done with my students
Teachers will use these nonfiction readers as part of their small group time. Each elementary teacher devotes at least 90 minutes to reading everyday. Part of that time is spent working with students in small group. Using more nonfiction during this time will allow students to not only practice reading while be introduced to new comprehension skills, but they wil exposed to science and social studies related topics.
Benefits to my students
For years experts have reported on the direct correlation between the amount students read and their ability to read. Current research shows that it is not only how much students read but what they read that promotes success. Students need to be exposed to a variety of types of text. We are trying to provide a balance between fiction and nonfiction in our small group reading time. Having multiple copies of nonfiction readers will allow teachers to use these books to teach comprehension skills, make text comparisons and build background knowledge.
