Goal
Gel electrophoresis is a laboratory technique used to visualize DNA on a gel where the DNA molecules are separated according to their size. By performing this lab, students will be able to perform forensic analysis to identify various DNA samples.
What will be done with my students
This experiment simulates the use of DNA in forensic investigations. Students cast agarose gels, load predigested DNA, and perform electrophoresis. They use the banding patterns of the DNA in the gel to compare the DNA fingerprints of 2 suspects with evidence and victim DNA. This lab experience will compliment our biotechnology discussion in AP Biology. The kit will provide materials for 10 experiments, and the refill kits will allow for continued use of the lab.
Benefits to my students
Providing hands on applications to accompany our classroom discussions is a big part of our AP Biology curriculum. The field of biotechnology is a rapidly growing component in the biological sciences. This STEM based activity will provide our students the opportunity to engage in forensic DNA analysis.
Budget Narrative
Included is the lab kit plus one refill kit to provide enough materials for my 3 AP Biology classes.
