Pocket dictionaries for literacy development that puts words at my student's fingertips. This project seeks to provide every student with a personal dictionary to support vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and independent learning. Many of my students lack immediate access at home to reference materials, which can slow down their ability to engage with new texts confidently. A pocket dictionary is a simple, yet powerful tool that promotes autonomy, literacy, and long-term academic success with out wi-fi.

Project Description

Strong vocabulary and word knowledge are foundational to reading fluency and comprehension. for many of our students unfamiliar words can create barriers to understanding grade-level texts. Having a portable. personal dictionary empowers students to look up and learn words independently. This resource levels the playing field for learners who may not have access to such materials at home, helping close gaps in literacy and academic performance. Dictionaries will be incorporated into daily reading, writing, and cross curricular lessons. Students will be encouraged to take dictionaries home to support continued learning outside the classroom. Teachers will provide instruction on how to effectively use a dictionary for word recognition, spelling, and vocabulary enrichment.

Expected Outcomes

My students will improve vocabulary acquisition. They will expand their vocabulary by using dictionaries during reading and writing tasks. Increase reading comprehension. Students will strengthen their ability to understand complex texts through word discovery. Foster independence and confidence. Students will learn to self-monitor and problem solve when encountering unfamiliar words. Support writing development. Dictionaries will help students with spelling, word choice, and clarity in their written expression.

Purpose of Funding

Grant funds will be used to purchase a class set of pocket dictionaries for my students. The dictionaries are durable and portable serving students throughout the school year and beyond.
