The purpose of this project is give better access to the county provided adaptive curriculum for the students who have the most significant and severe cognitive disabilities. Each student on access points utilizes enCORE by Teachtown (a web based curriculum) as our adapted core curriculum. One of the components of enCORE is what we call "Student led assignments". The enCORE app on the iPad is where the students can access these content driven assignments. The goal of this project is update the access from a device the freezes, reloads, or fails (causing frustion for students), to a piece of technology that is current, updated, and supports the core curriculum app making learning accessible and fun. This adapted curriculum addresses ELA, Math, Social Studies and Science as well as social skills and basic life skills.

Project Description

In order for the students to access the curriculum, they need to have technology that is current, updated, and fast. The students in my program sometimes have behavioral challenges that are caused by technology failure, outdated apps, and glitches. The enCORE curriculum app is designed for our most significantly cognitively disabled students, helping them learn new content, while also gaining independence and confidence. Each student is capable of meeting these standards of education if given the tools to do so. My classroom is designed using a center rotation. If given new iPads, each student could be independent in the technology center, without worry that the app will freeze or fail. Currently when this happens the student struggles to advocate for themselves to have it fixed; causing the student to lose confidence, become frustrated, and have a bad relationship with the curriculum. Updated technology would alleviate challenging behaviors that occur from restarting the app in the midst of student work when the app fails, which also pulls the teacher away from small group and 1:1 instruction. This allows students to be given the opportunity to practice independence and give them confidence in my small classroom, which can carry over to their related arts "big" classes with their general education peers. This project meets the needs of each student in the IBI classes, who utilize Teachtown enCORE adaptive curriculum. Each iPad would have the "air watch" security measures enabled to monitor student use across the district. This will allow district to monitor student use and internet safety.

Expected Outcomes

The expected outcome for each student is to become independent and confident in the technology center while accessing the "student led" portion of our adapted curriculum, Teachtown enCORE. If given new technology, I expect fewer challenging behaviors, a seamless presentation of curriculum materials, and student independence regarding our technology center and related arts classes. Our classrooms are data driven. In order to measure outcomes, we rely on Teachtown enCORE data reporting, daily behavior data collection, teacher observations, as well as functional communication data collection.
