The overall purpose of this goal is to foster a love for geology and rock hounding. The STEM students will learn crystal and mineral formations and also understand how geode crystals are formed.
School supplies - Markers, paints, paper, crayons, clay, pencils, sharpies, modeling dough, etc.
The Geodes project will begin with examining a geode and describing the qualities and textures of mineral formations. STEM students break open the geodes in pairs or groups of two or three. The socks are important for safety, to keep the pieces of geodes from flying into the children's eyes. The display box will hold their piece of geode and add to their own personal collection. The students will examine the crystals and they will gain a deeper of mineralogy.
These children will be exposed to gems and minerals in their geology class at the STEAM learning center for the first time. Many of the children will be experiencing the excitement and personal fulfillment of breaking open a geode first hand. Curiosity of "what is inside" of each geode will be exciting for the STEAM students and is also a central tenet in science inquiry. Breaking open the geode will also allow the children to observe the mineral and crystal formations. Mineralogy is a skill set in geology which will be met in this class.
