The purpose of this project is to help 5th graders identify their unique strengths before moving into middle school, a transition that can often feel overwhelming. Instead of focusing on weaknesses, students will discover their Top 5 Strengths through Gallup’s research-based assessment. This will provide them with language to describe their talents and the confidence to lean on those strengths in new environments. Teachers who interact with these students will also complete the assessment so that students and staff share a strengths-based vocabulary. The students will also see the strengths modeled and find common ground.

This project addresses ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors focused on confidence in abilities, resilience, and building positive relationships with adults. It supports the school’s learning goals of increasing student engagement and readiness for middle school.

Project Description

Each 5th grader and their 10 key teachers will receive a code to complete the Gallup StrengthsFinder “Top 5” assessment. Students will then participate in a counselor-led workshop where they learn about their strengths, reflect in journals, and share their top qualities with peers. Teachers will also explore their strengths and practice using the same language with students in the classroom.

To reinforce this learning, students’ Top 5 strengths will be displayed on a Strengths Wall, providing daily reminders of their potential. Teachers will have access to resource guides to integrate strengths-based conversations into their lessons. This project ensures that both students and teachers enter middle school with tools to support confidence, motivation, and belonging.

Expected Outcomes

Student outcomes: 100% of 5th graders will report feeling more confident about their transition to middle school and able to name their Top 5 strengths.

Teacher outcomes: Teachers will report an increased ability to support student confidence using strengths-based language.

School outcomes: Improved transition readiness will be measured by pre- and post-surveys, student reflection journals, and counselor check-ins.

By focusing on what is “strong” rather than what is “wrong,” this project will equip students with tools for resilience, belonging, and success during a critical developmental shift.

Purpose of Funding

Grant funds will be used to purchase Gallup StrengthsFinder Top 5 codes for 15 fifth-grade students and 10 teachers, along with reflection materials and display resources to bring the results to life. The funding ensures that each student discovers their unique strengths and learns how to apply them during the critical transition to middle school. By also equipping teachers with the same assessment and a set of strengths-based guides, the project creates a shared language of strengths between students and staff. Supplies like journals, display boards, and certificates will reinforce learning, celebrate student growth, and make the program visible across the school. This funding provides students with confidence and teachers with tools to support them, building a culture that focuses on what is strong rather than what is wrong.
