The primary goal of this project is to develop reusable and movable scenic elements—such as scenic flats and provide specialty orders of costumes—that will enhance staging flexibility and visual appeal for both middle and high school theater productions. This initiative also aims to provide hands-on, interdisciplinary educational experiences by actively involving theater and visual arts students in the design, and painting of scenic components. Through this collaboration, students will deepen their understanding of technical theater concepts such as dimension, proportion, and visual composition while fostering creative problem-solving and innovation in scenic design. The project supports a safe, durable, and adaptable scenic infrastructure that can be reused across multiple productions and years. Additionally, it aligns with Florida State Standards including TH.912.C.1.2 (using design to support theme and mood), TH.912.S.2.1 (collaborating in design and execution), TH.68.S.3.4 (developing foundational technical theater skills at the middle school level), and VA.912.C.1.5 (applying visual art knowledge in interdisciplinary contexts).

This exciting project will transform our theater productions by creating a versatile collection of movable scenic elements—including tall scenic flats—that will serve our musicals -both middle school and high school performances- in the NNC Sanctuary as well as support the creativity of our students, and showcasing their characters through costuming. The scenic flats can be re-purposed and easily transported to/from the Sanctuary to allow various set shapes and theater stage options with a strong visual impact for all to appreciate.
The image included is merely a conceptual image for Frozen, where flats add dimension, shape and impact to the stage.
What makes this project truly special is the collaborative learning experience it fosters between our theater and visual arts students. Together, they will bring designs to life by painting, and customizing scenic pieces under the guidance of the director and technical staff. This hands-on partnership encourages creativity, innovation, and a deeper understanding of how technical theater and visual arts combine to create compelling storytelling environments.
Beyond supporting this year’s productions—The Wizard of Oz for Middle school and Frozen for High School—this investment will establish a lasting scenic infrastructure that can be adapted and reused for future shows. It will elevate the entire TVS Performing Arts program by building essential skills, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and enhancing the overall theatrical experience for performers and audiences alike. Students will learn hands on the process of a show's set and needs as a director for an idea to become a concept to a physical impact that they have contributed to.
~Development of tall scenic flats and smaller scenic pieces that can be repainted and adapted for future productions, fostering sustainability.
~Enhanced student knowledge and skills in technical theater, stagecraft, painting, visual appeal and collaborative design.
~Increased cross-disciplinary collaboration between theater and visual arts students, enriching educational experiences.
~Improved ability for students to translate visual and dimensional concepts into physical stage elements that support the narrative and mood of productions.
~Establishment of a reusable scenic inventory, reducing future production costs and supporting ongoing theater education.
The $2,000 grant will be allocated primarily to:
Purchase materials for tall scenic flats and smaller scenic pieces ($1,000), allowing students to collaborate on painting, and conceptual ideas and collaboration.
Obtain scenic paint and supplies ($150) to finish scenic elements and allow for vibrant, reusable backdrops that align with the shared director’s and students visual design.
Allow creative freedom with the use of color and fabrics for costumes to add to the wow factor of the production ($850).
This funding ensures the creation of a long-lasting, adaptable, and educational scenic environment that benefits multiple productions and students across grade levels.
