Goal(s)

To give students in intermediate grades an opportunity to try something unique in music class by playing a wind instrument. The learning goal is to promote individual practice on a chosen piece and to encourage students to work in smaller ensembles known as consorts. This will be an instrument that they can add to their musical skill set along with classroom instruments.

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

Project Description

Students will be encouraged to take prior knowledge and aural information from music class (pitch, rhythms), apply that knowledge and use it to play a wind instrument. They will develop fine motor skills and learn new repertoire (alone and with others) on an instrument that is portable, accessible and simple to use. In the process, they will be asked to analyze notes and symbols, produce the movement necessary to play the music (includes understanding the physics of how the sounds inside the recorder are produced), then connect all the components of creating music including phrasing and breath.

Expected Outcomes

Students will develop critical learning skills by analyzing tasks, setting small goals, and building toward larger achievements. They will synthesize prior knowledge, identify areas for growth and practice strategies to achieve success. Collaborative opportunities will promote teamwork, goal-setting and problem-solving, allowing students to experience both individual and group accomplishments.

Purpose of Funding

The funds will be used exclusively to purchase recorders for each student. It will be enough for each child to have their own and also allows for a few more if any are lost, broken or if new students arrive later in the year. All other materials are either at the school or will be provided by the teacher.
