Goal(s)

My proposal this year is to fund five tubano drums. Over the past couple years I have been working towards having a full class set of tubano drums for my music classes so every single student can use their own tubano drum in class. I am requesting Remo 100 Series Kintekloth Tubanos. These are the kind I already use in class and having five more would allow more students to use their own. Naples Park Elementary currently owns 9 Kintekloth Remo Tubanos which is not enough for a full class so I'm hoping with these extra drums we can start doing more activities with each class having their own drum to use.

Project Description

I use these tubano drums for World Music Drumming curriculum which I am certified Level 2 in. The curriculum goes over various grooves that can be used to have the students express themselves with through these newfound rhythms. The activities will give the students a chance to hone their listening skills, a chance for students to have solo parts, understanding their part and purpose within the music, and teamwork. These tubano drums can be used throughout K-5th grade, impacting the whole school in ways that the tubano drums can do better than other methods. 

 

Expected Outcomes

These drums are used to teach beat, rhythm, technique, and improvisation. I've been using a few drums and there's already been improvement the past few years I've been implementing them into my curriculum, having more would allow for the use of a variety of more activities. The drums are also an opportunity for students to solo and improvise which they rarely get the chance to do in school outside of music class, so the students who want to shine can use these drums as an outlet for that. I also use the World Music Drumming curriculum as a way to teach music from various cultures because the curriculum comes from West Africa, Afro-Cuban, and Latin origins. I can measure the outcomes by working through the textbook for the World Music Drumming curriculum. There will also be a general rise in level of technique for the various skills I described which I can judge how we are progressing.  

 

Purpose of Funding

This budget will be used to buy 5 tubano drums. The first purchase is a set of three that West Music provides for $1019.85. It includes a 10",12", and 14" drum. Then I will individually purchase another 10" ($299.95) and 14" ($389.95). There is no tax or shipping fee through West Music so this is the final price. I can vouch for these drums, I already have some and they are incredibly durable and sound great.
