The primary goal of The Amazing Everglades Race Grant is to empower my third-grade students to set, strive for, and achieve individualized quarterly science literacy goals that integrate reading, writing, and science. These goals will be aligned with district learning standards and centered on the Florida Everglades—one of the most vital ecosystems in the world.
Through this grant, students will:
• Engage with high-quality trade books focused on Everglades-related topics, building background knowledge and fostering a love for reading.
• Set personal reading goals and track progress throughout each quarter, promoting ownership of learning and self-motivation.
• Participate in collaborative class discussions that deepen understanding of Everglades habitats, native species, and ecological importance.
• Respond to learning through structured writing tasks, reinforcing comprehension and communication skills.
• Work cooperatively with peers in hands-on science and literacy activities that encourage inquiry, teamwork, and critical thinking.
By integrating science content with literacy instruction, this program will support academic growth, environmental awareness, and student engagement. The grant will help create a classroom culture where students are inspired to explore, reflect, and take pride in their learning and their connection to the natural world.

This year, third-grade students will embark on an exciting educational journey modeled after The Amazing Race, where each “leg” of the race takes them deeper into the wonders of the Florida Everglades. There will be 9 legs of the race. Through this immersive, interdisciplinary experience, students will explore one of the world’s most important ecosystems while building science literacy skills aligned with district and state standards.
Each quarter represents a new leg of the race, with students setting individual science literacy goals that integrate reading, writing, and scientific inquiry. At each checkpoint, students will:
• Read trade books and informational texts about Everglades habitats, native species, and environmental challenges.
• Complete literacy challenges, such as journaling, responding to writing prompts, and participating in guided discussions to build comprehension and vocabulary.
• Engage in science-based tasks, including habitat investigations, plant and animal identification, and ecological relationship mapping.
• Collaborate in team-based activities, solving clues and completing cooperative learning challenges that mirror the teamwork and problem-solving of The Amazing Race.
As students progress through each leg, they will track their growth, reflect on their learning, and celebrate milestones. The final “destination” will showcase their achievements through a culminating project or presentation that highlights their understanding of the Everglades and their personal academic growth.
This project will not only foster curiosity and environmental awareness but also empower students to take ownership of their learning journey. By combining adventure, collaboration, and academic rigor, “The Amazing Everglades Race” will transform science literacy into an unforgettable experience.
By participating in “The Amazing Everglades Race,” third-grade students will experience meaningful academic and personal growth through a dynamic, interdisciplinary exploration of the Florida Everglades. This project is designed to foster independence, collaboration, and environmental stewardship while aligning with district science literacy standards.
Students will:
• Set and work toward individualized science literacy goals each quarter, developing ownership of their learning and building self-motivation.
• Track their academic progress using personal data binders, learning to reflect on their growth and celebrate achievements.
• Develop a strong sense of classroom community, united by a shared mission to explore and protect the Everglades ecosystem.
• Read engaging trade books about Everglades plants, animals, habitats, and environmental significance, deepening content knowledge and literacy skills.
• Earn themed rewards as they complete each leg of the race, symbolizing progress and fostering pride and belonging.
• Internalize key facts and concepts about the Everglades, becoming confident ambassadors of environmental awareness.
• Share their learning with peers and families, spreading knowledge and appreciation for one of Florida’s most vital ecosystems.
This project will not only support academic achievement in reading, writing, and science, but also cultivate a lifelong connection to the natural world and a sense of responsibility for its preservation.
Funding from this grant will support the implementation of “The Amazing Everglades Race,” a dynamic, interdisciplinary learning experience for third-grade students. Grant funds will be used to purchase 180 yellow "Amazing Race"-like envelopes to serve as race-themed clue holders for each activity leg, and cardstock to create durable, reusable clue cards that guide students through science and literacy challenges. Additionally, funds will cover color printing costs, supporting the production of student materials such as reading passages, data binder sheets, journaling pages, and activity instructions. To further motivate and celebrate student progress, the grant will also fund the purchase of small Amazing Race-themed prizes awarded at key checkpoints throughout the project. These prizes will reinforce engagement and achievement.
