The purpose of this project is to provide students with access to high-quality xylophones for use in the elementary music classroom. Currently, my classroom does not have enough barred instruments for students to play together, which limits their ability to fully participate in lessons and develop critical music skills. Adding xylophones will address the need for equitable access to instruments, allow for more hands-on learning, and support active music-making, collaboration, and creativity. This will also ensure that every child has the opportunity to experience music through playing, not just listening or observing.

b) Learning Goal or Academic Outcome
The learning goal of this project is to help students develop music literacy, rhythmic and melodic accuracy, and ensemble performance skills through active participation on xylophones. With more instruments available, students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of melody, harmony, and rhythm in real time. This directly supports Florida Music Education Standards (e.g., MU.1.C.1.1: Respond to music from a variety of sound sources to show awareness of steady beat, rhythm, and melody). The academic outcome is that students will strengthen critical thinking, listening, and teamwork skills, while also building confidence and joy in music-making.

Goal(s)

Project Description

Students will engage in a variety of hands-on music activities using the xylophones, including:
Melody and Rhythm Practice: Students will play simple melodies and rhythmic patterns individually and in small groups to reinforce note recognition, steady beat, and rhythmic accuracy.

Ensemble Playing:
Students will collaborate in pairs or small ensembles to perform short pieces, learning to listen to each other, balance sound, and maintain timing.
Improvisation and Composition: Students will explore creating their own melodies and rhythmic patterns on the xylophones, fostering creativity and problem-solving.
Integration with Classroom Lessons: Xylophone activities will be linked to broader music concepts such as pitch, dynamics, tempo, and musical expression.

Performance Opportunities:
Students will perform their pieces for classmates, school assemblies, or special events, building confidence and presentation skills.
Through these activities, students will have structured, engaging opportunities to actively participate in music-making, while developing foundational musical skills that support both academic and social-emotional growth.

Expected Outcomes

a) What Will Improve/Change for Students

With the addition of xylophones, students will have equitable access to instruments, allowing all of them to actively participate in music-making rather than observing. This will improve their music literacy, including note recognition, rhythmic accuracy, and melodic understanding. Students will also develop stronger collaboration and listening skills through ensemble work, build confidence performing in front of others, and experience greater engagement and joy in the music classroom. Overall, the project will transform lessons from largely observational to highly interactive and hands-on.

b) How You Will Measure These Outcomes

Outcomes will be measured through a combination of observational and performance-based assessments:
Skill Development: Students’ ability to play rhythms and melodies will be assessed through teacher observation and checklists during practice and performance activities.
Ensemble Participation: Success in collaborative playing will be measured by students’ ability to maintain timing, listen to peers, and follow directions in group performances.
Engagement and Confidence: Engagement will be monitored through participation rates, anecdotal notes, and student self-reflections after activities.
Performance Evidence: Students’ growth will be demonstrated in recorded performances, informal classroom demonstrations, and potential school assemblies or showcases.

Purpose of Funding

The grant funds will be used to purchase 3 high-quality student xylophones and mallets for the music classroom. These instruments will directly support the activities outlined in this grant, including individual practice, ensemble playing, and performance opportunities. Each xylophone will provide equitable access for students, ensuring that every child can participate hands-on in music lessons.
Funds will also cover any necessary accessories, such as carrying cases or replacement mallets, to maintain the instruments and extend their longevity. By investing in these xylophones, the grant will enable students to actively engage in music-making, build foundational musical skills, and foster creativity, collaboration, and confidence in ways that were not previously possible due to limited classroom resources.
