All students at Educational Pathways Academy have a language-based learning disability and are working diligently to develop literacy skills and succeed academically. Many students also navigate multiple diagnoses, most commonly ADHD, and have experienced frustration, isolation, or failure in other academic settings. Our approach honors the unique ways each student’s brain works, providing intensive academic support alongside social-emotional development. A key focus is building problem-solving skills and confidence, empowering students to have positive interactions with peers, teachers, and family.
To support these goals, this project will provide students with an immersive, structured improv program designed to strengthen communication, collaboration, and creative thinking. Through engaging improv games and exercises, students will practice listening actively, supporting peers, solving problems collaboratively, and adapting to unexpected situations. This experiential approach fosters social-emotional growth, self-expression, and resilience, giving students a memorable and fun toolkit of skills that enhances both their academic performance and interpersonal abilities.

Project Description

Educational Pathways Academy (EPA) seeks funding for "Improv For Communication Skills," a full day of rotating improv workshops facilitated by instructors from The Naples Players (TNP). Students will participate in small, age-appropriate groups alongside their classroom teachers in an immersive and interactive series of activities. These workshops, developed collaboratively by EPA leadership and TNP instructors, are designed to target key areas of student growth, including communication skills, self-expression, role-playing, perspective-taking, problem-solving, creativity, and confidence.
This experience will serve as a lasting reference point for both students and teachers, providing strategies and touchstones that can be applied throughout the school year. By engaging in hands-on, playful, and collaborative exercises, students will develop essential social-emotional and academic skills while building confidence, resilience, and a sense of community within the classroom.

Expected Outcomes

Through participation in the immersive improv workshops, students at Educational Pathways Academy will develop stronger communication, collaboration, and creative problem-solving skills. They will gain confidence in expressing themselves, taking perspective, and working with peers in both social and academic settings. By practicing these skills in a fun, supportive, and hands-on environment, students will be better equipped to approach classroom activities with resilience, adaptability, and engagement. The program will also provide teachers with strategies and touchpoints they can reinforce throughout the school year, creating a consistent framework for social-emotional growth and academic participation.
Outcomes will be observed by classroom teachers and documented through reports to families. Teachers will monitor improvements in student participation, collaboration, and willingness to take creative risks during daily activities. Progress in communication, self-expression, problem-solving, and confidence will be assessed through reflective discussions, teacher notes, and anecdotal records. Additionally, structured follow-ups during classroom exercises will help measure how effectively students are applying the skills learned in improv workshops to everyday academic and social situations.

Purpose of Funding

Funds will be used to support a full day of improv workshops for students at Educational Pathways Academy, totaling $1,200. This includes planning and preparation meetings between The Naples Players instructors and EPA staff, the creation of four unique, age-appropriate curricula with specific learning goals, and travel and teaching time for one TNP instructor. These funds ensure that each workshop is thoughtfully designed to meet students’ academic and social-emotional needs, providing an engaging, hands-on experience that reinforces communication, collaboration, problem-solving, creativity, and confidence.
