The purpose of this funding proposal is to foster a love of reading and deeper engagement with literature among students with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities. These students are often reluctant readers who struggle to connect with traditional classroom texts. By providing each student with their own copy of a book that they can annotate, highlight, dogear, and truly make their own, we remove barriers to active reading and build confidence in their literacy skills. Owning a personal copy also provides immeasurable value for students who may not have access to books at home, ensuring equitable opportunities for literacy development. One of the goals of Educational Pathways Academy is to foster a love of learning. Providing students with books that they can own, treasure, and revisit, supports this important development in each child’s literacy journey.

This project supports students in developing critical reading skills such as identifying literary devices, analyzing character development, and participating in meaningful literary discussions. It also encourages independent reading by aligning texts with students’ interests and reading levels. The academic outcomes include increased reading fluency, improved comprehension, greater participation in class discussions, and, most importantly, nurturing a lifelong love of reading.

Project Description

All students at Educational Pathways Academy are working diligently to overcome the challenges of dyslexia, ADHD, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and other learning differences. Many of our students face multiple diagnoses, which makes it essential to provide personalized instruction and encouragement. I work closely with each child, knowing their strengths, struggles, and interests, and use that knowledge to guide them toward texts that will both challenge and inspire them.
This project will provide each student with their own copy of selected books, giving them the opportunity to annotate, highlight, and interact with the text in ways that foster ownership and deeper engagement. Specific areas of focus include reading comprehension, character analysis, written reflection (encouraging students to write directly in their book), making connections across texts, vocabulary development, sentence structure, fluency, and overall literacy growth. Students will also help select titles for a growing classroom library, ensuring the collection reflects their diverse interests and reading levels. With personal copies in hand, students can use the texts during language arts instruction and also bring them home to continue practicing independently. By pairing high-interest, accessible texts with individualized guidance, this project addresses both academic and social-emotional needs.

Expected Outcomes

Students will strengthen key literacy skills while developing confidence, resilience, and a sense of pride as they complete books on their own. Most importantly, they will begin to see themselves not as struggling readers, but as growing readers who can connect with and enjoy literature. Outcomes are measured in key focus areas: growth in oral reading fluency, text readability, and foundational literacy skills. Progress is carefully tracked and documented using a combination of tools, including IMSE assessments, Read Naturally Live reports, Lexia Core5, STAR Reading, and standardized measures such as WIAT, iReady, and FAST. This multi-faceted approach ensures that improvements are clearly observed, data-driven, and reflective of each student’s individual literacy development.

Purpose of Funding
