a) Overall Purpose and Needs Addressed
The purpose of this project is to give second grade students an opportunity to explore the art of clay sculpting while developing leadership skills. By creating sculptures that will be shared or donated to the school and wider community, students will learn how art can be a form of giving back, beautification, and service. The project addresses the need for students to have creative outlets, hands-on experiences with fine arts, and authentic opportunities to connect their learning to real-world community impact.

b) Learning Goal / Academic Outcome
The project will help students build fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and artistic expression through sculpting techniques. It will also foster collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills as students work together as a leadership team. Academic outcomes include applying elements of art (form, texture, shape), practicing reflective discussion about artistic choices, and learning to connect personal expression with social responsibility.

Project Description

a) Project Description and Activities
The 2nd Grade Clay Student Leadership Team will meet regularly to learn the art of clay sculpting. Students will be introduced to a variety of techniques such as hand-building, carving, and texturing. They will design and create individual and group clay sculptures with the purpose of sharing their work beyond the classroom. Some pieces may be displayed throughout the school to beautify the campus, while others may be gifted to community spaces such as libraries, senior centers, or local organizations. Students will also reflect on their process, present their artwork to others, and take leadership in explaining how art can bring joy and meaning to a community.

b) Meeting Student, Classroom, and School Needs
This project provides students with hands-on, creative learning that strengthens fine motor skills, artistic expression, and confidence. It encourages leadership by giving students ownership of a team that has a visible impact on the school and community. For the classroom, it enriches the art curriculum with a deeper focus on sculptural techniques and collaboration. For the school, it fosters pride and school spirit as student-made sculptures become lasting contributions to campus beautification and outreach efforts. Ultimately, the project supports both academic and social-emotional growth while showing students that their creativity has the power to inspire and serve others.

Expected Outcomes

a) Improvements/Changes for Students
Through this project, students will gain confidence in their artistic abilities, improve fine motor skills, and learn the fundamentals of sculpting. They will also strengthen leadership, teamwork, and communication skills by working together toward a shared goal of creating and gifting art. Students will develop a stronger sense of responsibility and pride, recognizing that their creativity can positively impact their school and community.

b) Measuring Outcomes
Outcomes will be measured in several ways:

Student Reflection: Students will write or share reflections about what they learned, how they grew as artists and leaders, and how their sculptures contribute to the community.

Skill Growth: Observation of improved sculpting techniques, craftsmanship, and ability to apply elements of art.

Community Impact: Feedback from staff, peers, and community members who receive or view the sculptures.

Leadership Participation: Tracking student engagement and collaboration during the project, including teamwork, idea-sharing, and problem-solving.

Purpose of Funding

Grant funds will be used to provide students with the essential materials and tools needed to successfully complete clay sculpting projects. Specifically, the funds will purchase clay, sculpting tools, glazes, paintbrushes, and other supplies necessary for students to practice and refine their sculpting skills. In addition, funds will support the purchase of a classroom kiln and safety equipment so that student creations can be properly fired, finished, and preserved for long-term display.

These items directly align with the project goals by ensuring that every student has access to high-quality art materials and the ability to complete sculptures from start to finish. Having the right tools and resources will allow the Clay Student Leadership Team to create professional-quality artwork that can be proudly displayed around the school and shared with the community. This alignment ensures that the grant funds not only support student learning in the arts, but also fulfill the larger purpose of giving back through lasting, meaningful works of art.
