The purpose of this project is to increase student engagement and understanding of key fourth-grade science concepts through meaningful, hands-on experiences. Students will dissect owl pellets to study food chains, raise caterpillars to observe life cycles, and examine flowers to understand plant reproduction. These activities will give students opportunities to work independently and collaboratively, encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and a lasting understanding of science standards.

Project Description

My goal with this project is to provide fourth-grade students with hands-on science labs that bring science concepts to life. Students will dissect owl pellets to study food chains, raise caterpillars to observe and document life cycles, and examine flowers to understand plant structures and reproduction. These activities will be integrated into the science curriculum to support inquiry, observation, and critical thinking skills.

This project meets the needs of our students and school by making science more engaging, interactive, and accessible. Many of our students learn best through active exploration rather than passive reading. By giving them direct experiences with real-world phenomena, we help them develop a deeper understanding of science standards while sparking curiosity and excitement for learning. These experiences also support long-term retention of concepts, promote problem-solving skills, and encourage students to see themselves as scientists.

Expected Outcomes

Through this project, students will gain a stronger understanding of life science concepts such as food chains, life cycles, and plant reproduction. This is especially critical since these standards are assessed on the fifth-grade FAST science test, even though some of these concepts are only formally taught in fourth grade. By participating in hands-on activities, students’ engagement and curiosity in science will grow, and abstract concepts will become concrete and memorable.

Outcomes will be measured through student lab work, science journals, class discussions, and student engagement.

Purpose of Funding

Grant funds will be used to purchase owl pellet, dissection materials for owl pellets, caterpillar/butterfly kits, and flower dissection materials. These hands-on resources align with our science curriculum and will help students build a stronger understanding of life science concepts through active investigation.
