The purpose of my project is to provide drawing and painting students with an opportunity to draw outside on our classroom patio using professional, comfortable, and long-lasting drawing horse benches. Painting students would be able to try en plein air, while the drawing students could easily draw observational landscapes or architectural scenes straight from real life.
These benches are portable and can be stored in the classroom to keep them away from the elements. They also offer the benefit of the paper or canvas being positioned below eye level, which enriches the visibility of the observational study and promotes better posture.

Project Description

Painting and Drawing students have units embedded in the curriculum on landscapes and still life. I have a large, covered patio attached to my classroom that we would love to utilize more often for students to draw/paint landscapes, our school architecture, and even cars parked around the building. However, when we currently use this space, we carry our classroom metal stools outside and hold drawing boards in our laps to create our mark-making. The grant aims to provide wooden drawing benches for the patio, where students can sit and place their drawing boards while working on assignments. This meets the needs of the students for several reasons. First, it exposes them to a new type of equipment that is commonly found at the college level and in professional studios. Finally, it provides students with a more comfortable position to draw/paint in, which could help them work efficiently from bell to bell.

Expected Outcomes

By adding these benches to our classroom patio, I expect to see an increase in student interest in assignments and an easier interaction with peers throughout these units. As a result, I am hoping to see a rise in classroom participation and achievement in these units. Their progress will be monitored daily and weekly, depending on the length of the assignments. Since we will be able to work on assignments in this space for multiple days, it will give students and me a chance to easily confer about what they are viewing and their mark making while they are using the resources. We will assess their success and areas of improvement for each task.

Purpose of Funding

This grant is for (8) Drawing Horse Benches. The advanced courses typically have eight students or fewer per period. This would also allow a small group of beginners to take turns working on the patio, making it easier for me to support and instruct with this new equipment. As a result, advanced students will be together, and the beginning students will be able to observe and emulate them.
