The overall purpose of this project is to bring the writing process to life. If approved, "The Writing Workshop Cafe" will create a student-centered space for writing magic to happen! This includes of composing essays, peer review, revision, and collaboration.
The needs that this project address are engagement and motivation. When it comes to writing, students often see it as a "chore" and aren't excited to immerse themselves into the writing process. "The Writing Workshop Cafe" will create student engagement, and therefore motivation by students wanting to participate in it. It will provide students an opportunity to interact and collaborate with one another in meaningful ways. The cafe atmosphere provides a safe, supportive environment where every student’s “voice” is valued and celebrated.
The learning goal/academic outcome that this project addresses is for students to become independent, successful, and confident writers through collaboration in the writing process that is drafting, peer review, revision, and final edit.

In the "Writing Workshop Cafe," students rotate through themed “cafe stations” (hook and thesis counter, topic sentence and transition cart, evidence and elaboration deli, conclusion bakery, etc.). where they review classmates’ essays and practice identifying the essential components of expository and/or argumentative writing. Using feedback and structured prompts at each station, students provide targeted peer feedback while strengthening their own understanding of effective essay structure. Each student will “publish” a polished section of their essay on a paper plate—transforming their writing into a creative “signature dish” for display and celebration.
The project will meet the needs of my students by fostering collaboration, critical thinking, and ownership in the writing process.
What will improve for my students because of "The Writing Workshop Cafe" is creating excitement and engagement for writing. As previously mentioned, when it comes to essay writing, students are not excited to be involved as they see it as tedious or boring. With this project, students will want to participate and therefore, immerse themselves in the writing process, becoming successful writers.
Grants funds will be used to purchase materials that transform my classroom into an engaging, cafe-style writing workshop space. These resources will directly support student learning by making writing interactive, collaborative, and purposeful. At the same time, creating an excitement for the writing process.
