a. The purpose of this project is to publish Barron Collier High School's student-run literary magazine, Haute Commodity, as a high-quality, professionally printed publication. This project addresses the need for authentic publishing experiences for students, recognition of student voice and art, and engagement in real-world applications of writing, editing, designing and collaboration. Many students lack access to platforms where their creative and academic work can be shared and celebrated beyond the classroom and this project will provide this exciting opportunity for the students.

b. The project directly supports ELA academic standards related to writing, revising, peer editing and publishing, as well as cross-curricular competencies in media literacy, communication and digital design. It also promotes college and career readiness, specifically in areas such as journalism, creative writing, editing and publishing.

Project Description

a. Students will curate, edit, design and publish a 24-page literary magazine featuring original poetry, prose, essays, photography and artwork created by students across all grade levels. This project includes:
-Open submissions from students
-Peer editorial review process
-Layout and design using a digital publishing website
-Final production using MagCloud's perfect-binding printing service
-Distribution of 75 hard copies and free digital copies within the school community.
Throughout the project, students will engage in the full publication cycle-from content selection to page layout to final proofreading.

b. This project meets both academic and social-emotional needs. Academically, it provides a standards-based, authentic audience for student-writing. Socially, it fosters a sense of pride and belonging, particularly for students whose talents may not be recognized through traditional academic or athletic channels. It also supports students leadership through roles such as editor-in-chief, graphic designer and section editor.

Expected Outcomes

a. -Increased student engagement with reading and writing
-Stronger peer collaboration and project management skills
-Improved writing and revision quality, motivated by real-world publication
-Greater visibility and recognition of student voices, ideas and artistic talent

b. -Pre/Post student surveys on engagement, confidence and writing interest
-Rubric-based assessment of student writing and editing
-Tracking submission volume, editorial participation and distribution reach
-Qualitative feedback from staff, families and students on the final publication

Purpose of Funding

We are requesting funding to print 4 issues of a 24-page, full-color, perfect-bound magazine at 75 copies each issue, published through MagCloud. This funding will ensure that each contributing students receives a physical copy and that additional copies, both print and digital can be shared with fellow students, teachers and families. This tangible publication will stand as a long-term testament to the students' hard work, growth and creativity.
