Goal(s)

a) The overall purpose of this project is to provide an outdoor classroom where students can be engaged in science. This project aims to create a fun environment where teachers can take their students to do labs, make observations, and collaborate while being outside of the traditional classroom setting.
b) This project addresses student engagement and achievement. Studies have shown, that by bringing the classroom outdoors, students have improved academic performance, enhanced cognitive and social-emotional skills, better school attendance, and increased motivation. By bringing students at Manatee Middle School outside in a more open environment, I hope students become more excited to participate and become more involved in the content. The outdoor science lab will be such a great asset for our school.

Project Description

a) This project aims to develop an outdoor area and turn it into an outdoor classroom. The classroom would also serve as a place for science classrooms to come outside and do labs. The outdoor lab would serve the entire student population at Manatee Middle and the teachers. It would provide an exciting open area for students to learn, collaborate, create, discover, and grow in their knowledge and education. This project is asking to fund barstools and rugs for the lab tables, so that the area can be set up like a classroom.
b. ) This project will provide the students and staff at Manatee Middle School another area to learn without constraints. Middle schoolers are developing socially, and this setting allows for safe, structured peer interaction that will be supported through team-based projects. This will improve social skills like cooperation, leadership, as well as, engage the learners in their new learning environment. Middle schoolers often struggle with attention in indoor environments, especially with the increased cognitive load of adolescence, and the natural setting of an outdoor classroom can reduce mental fatigue and help students stay more focused and engaged. The outdoor lab also allows for more movement and middle school students often learn best when movement is integrated into the lesson. An outdoor lab allow for flexibility of movement without disrupting the learning process. 

 

Expected Outcomes

a.) I believe student engagement will greatly improve because of this project. Having an outdoor lab will encouraging active, hands-on exploration which will enhance focus, engagement, and well-being. By providing a space for collaboration and social growth, student independence, responsibility, and ownership of their learning will increase. If my request is funded, then the students at Manatee Middle School will experience a positive impact on their learning.
b)This impact will be evident in increased student engagement, which will lead to an increase in comprehension of the material. I am going to measure increased comprehension through the data analysis of summative assessments, as well as, through student observations.  

 

Purpose of Funding

The funds will be used to purchase 32 barstools, which will accommodate larger class sizes, and 5 waterproof mats that will go under the lab tables. The outdoor classroom/lab will be available to all teachers and will serve every student at Manatee Middle School.
