The overall purpose of this project is to assist the students with learning letters; letter sounds and syllables when teaching Heggerty and Fundations. Using the chart tablet allows me to use a visual representation of where the letter/sound is in a word. It promotes student engagement by allowing the students to model what they are learning. In kindergarten our primary learning targets are: LAFS.K.RF.2.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes). And LAFS.K.RF.3.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
School supplies - Markers, paints, paper, crayons, clay, pencils, sharpies, modeling dough, etc.
In our Morning Meeting we end with a Heggerty Lesson. Heggerty focuses on systematic lessons focusing on skills like rhyming, blending, segmenting, and substituting phonemes to build a strong foundation for reading, writing, and spelling. Using the chart tablet allows me to use a visual representation of where the letter/sound is in a word. As an example, I write a word on the chart tablet and show the students where within the word the beginning/middle/or ending sound is we are focusing on. Adding the visual will help the students understand the concept. Students will be able to model their classmates their understanding or help clarify a misconception. Allowing the students to model on the chart paper will promote student engagement.
Through this project students will be more engaged and excited to share their learning. Focusing on skills like rhyming, blending, segmenting, and substituting phonemes will build a strong foundation for reading, writing, and spelling. The ability of my students to encode and decode words, potentially reading on grade level at the end of the year will be my measure of success.
Funds will be used to purchase 2 of the 3 pack Pacon Ruled Chart Table and Mister Sketch Scented Markers. The kids will be excited when they find out the markers smell!
