The overall purpose of my classroom-based enterprise project is to increase independence levels and empower students with special learning needs to explore their potential as entrepreneurs by developing the skills necessary to plan and operate a business with support and assistance. This learning opportunity will also further develop their knowledge and skills related to careers in the coffee/hospitality industry and increase work-related behaviors through guided vocational practice at our Barron Beanery Coffee Shop. It addresses the needs of our learners by providing a hands-on learning environment to meet learning goals in "Introduction to Entrepreneurship" and gain new "Career Experiences", which are the titles of the two courses they take with me.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
Student interns will initiate the process of opening a coffee business by conducting surveys to gauge their potential customers' interests and preferences. The interns will explore new menu options, discuss inflation, and establish new prices that will enable them to make a profit, as well as determine the ideal serving locations for their consumers. Interns will then create a business plan and mission statement. The interns will continue planning by conducting research, practicing comparable shopping, and making calculations to determine the cost of each item. Interns will vote in the classroom to make business-based decisions. Before opening, they will conduct free taste tests for potential customers to gain interest and see which brands they prefer. In addition to the pre-planning portion of entrepreneurship, the interns will gain career experience in the hospitality industry by learning to make coffee, serving it to customers, and making deliveries throughout the building. They will also learn and practice proper sanitation requirements and techniques. The interns will have numerous opportunities to practice social interactions and gain customer service skills. Interns will also collect and count the money, make change, write bank deposit slips, determine profits, and demonstrate numerous other financial-management concepts, procedures, and strategies related to business ownership.
If my grant is funded, the benefits of the Barron Beanery will be invaluable. With this opportunity, The Barron Baristas (my students) will gain confidence, learn the importance of ethics in business, develop effective working relationships to accomplish tasks, gain intrapersonal and critical thinking skills, practice safety and good hygiene practices, improve social and communication skills, and improve functional academic skills. They will also create professional relationships through regular communication with their customers. All these skills will increase the likelihood of the interns obtaining and maintaining successful employment in the future. The outcomes will be measured by daily observations and performance-based assessments.
The purpose of this funding request is to enhance and modernize our student-run coffee cart, the Barron Beanery, which serves as a hands-on learning experience for our students. The items requested through this grant will directly support student independence, skill-building, and customer engagement.
-Mobile Cart: A new cart will enable students to make deliveries throughout the campus, promoting independence, responsibility, and real-world job skills.
-Cooler: This will allow us to offer iced coffee by keeping ice cold during operating hours, expanding our menu, and increasing customer satisfaction.
-Tasting Cups: These will be used to offer samples, helping us gather feedback and better understand customer preferences, while also promoting our business.
-Brita Water Filter: This will ensure the water used in our beverages is clean and great-tasting, improving the overall quality of our coffee.
-Clear Storage Containers: These will provide hygienic and organized storage for supplies, supporting a clean and professional work environment.
-Coffee Pot and Carafe: These essential tools will allow us to safely brew and serve coffee, ensuring efficiency and safety during service.
Together, these items will help us “perk up” the Barron Beanery, making it a more effective and engaging learning environment for our students while also enhancing the quality of service we provide to our school community. Any profit made through this experience will be used towards Curriculum-Based Instruction (CBI) trips, rewards for our interns, and to offset the cost of any required supplies for the L.I.F.E. program. We will also donate to an organization of the interns’ choice.
