The overall purpose of this project is to create a flexible, student-centered classroom environment through differentiated seating that supports engagement, focus, and personalized learning. Many students struggle to learn effectively in traditional desk-and-chair arrangements, as their individual needs for comfort, movement, and choice are not being met. By offering a variety of seating options—such as wobble stools, floor cushions, and ergonomic chairs—this project addresses the need to reduce distractions, improve attention, and provide equitable access to learning for all students.
The learning goal this project addresses is to increase student engagement and academic achievement by fostering an environment that promotes active participation, collaboration, and independence. Differentiated seating will support the development of critical reading and writing skills, improve stamina for completing tasks, and help students build ownership of their learning. Ultimately, this project aligns with academic outcomes such as improved reading comprehension, stronger written expression, and overall growth in ELA proficiency, while also nurturing social-emotional skills like self-regulation and responsibility.
Class Furniture - Carpets, transitional seating/desks, etc.
This project will provide differentiated seating options such as wobble stools, floor cushions, bean bag chairs, and ergonomic seating that allow students to choose a workspace that best supports their learning style and comfort. Students will use these seating choices during independent reading, writing, group work, and formative assessments. By incorporating flexible seating into daily instruction, the project promotes movement, choice, and collaboration while reducing off-task behaviors.
This project will meet the needs of students by creating a learning environment that supports engagement, focus, and self-regulation. For many learners, particularly those with attention or sensory needs, traditional seating can limit their ability to concentrate and remain actively involved. Differentiated seating addresses this by giving students the autonomy to select where they learn best, which helps them build responsibility and ownership of their learning. At the classroom and school level, this initiative aligns with our goal of raising student achievement in ELA by providing an environment that encourages reading stamina, active participation, and collaboration. The result is a more inclusive, student-centered classroom where all learners can thrive academically and socially.
Through this project, students will experience increased engagement, improved focus, and greater ownership of their learning. Differentiated seating will allow students to select workspaces that meet their individual needs, which will help reduce off-task behaviors, increase stamina during reading and writing tasks, and promote collaboration during group activities. Students will also develop self-regulation and responsibility by making appropriate seating choices that support their learning. Overall, this project will foster a more inclusive, comfortable, and student-centered classroom environment that supports higher academic achievement.
These outcomes will be measured through both academic and behavioral data. Academic progress will be tracked using iReady lesson completion rates, AR testing performance (with the goal of students achieving 80% or higher), and growth in FAST/ELA proficiency scores. Engagement and behavioral improvements will be measured by teacher observations, classroom participation, and reductions in redirection during instructional time. In addition, student surveys and reflections will be used to gather feedback on how differentiated seating impacts their ability to focus and learn. By combining academic data with observational and student voice measures, we will have a clear picture of how this project improves both learning outcomes and classroom culture.
The grant funds will be used to purchase a variety of differentiated seating options that create flexible learning environments for students. Specifically, funds will support the purchase of wobble stools, balance ball chairs, floor cushions, and bean bag seating to provide students with choices that meet their sensory, comfort, and focus needs. Each item directly aligns with the submitted purchase list, ensuring that students have access to durable and developmentally appropriate seating designed for classroom use.
By investing in these seating options, the funds will help transform the classroom into a more student-centered space that promotes engagement and achievement. Wobble stools and balance ball chairs will support students who need movement to stay focused during instruction. Floor cushions and bean bag seating will give students comfortable options for independent reading, writing, and collaborative activities. Together, these purchases will create an inclusive environment where every student can find a workspace that maximizes their learning potential, directly supporting the academic and social-emotional outcomes outlined in this proposal.
