The overall purpose of my IXL Math project is to promote students in practicing grade level math standards in a fun and engaging way. For each math unit that I teach, I assign specific IXL math skills that address all of the standards for the unit. Students are able to get immediate feedback for correct and incorrect answers, so they can adjust their thinking and I can target which students need intervention by me to be successful in that standard. This helps my students reach our school wide WIG (Wildly Important Goal) of being proficient in all 5th grade math standards by May 2026.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
IXL is a computer based math program that gives students practice problems in specific standards that I assign to students based on each unit I am teaching. The program gives immediate feedback to students so that I can identify which students are still struggling with the standard and allow for me to intervene. This meets the needs of my students by identifying areas of need, and also allows me to assign lower grade level skills to help build the math foundation they might be missing which is causing them to struggle in 5th grade standards. This also allows me to enrich my students who have quickly mastered 5th grade skills by giving them access to higher level math standards. This keeps all students engaged and challenged. To make this even more engaging for my students, once they have mastered a skill, I allow them to take a spin on my prize wheel or take a basketball shot from the hoop I have in my room. This incentivizes students to practice up to mastery and always gets student engaged with and excited about their own learning. The other aspect that was a surprise to me the first year I implemented this program was how excited my students got by cheering on their classmates. Seeing them get excited for OTHER student successes when a skill was mastered and hoping their peers are able to land on "Winner" on my wheel or make their basketball shot is always such a heartwarming thing to witness. They are all excited for each other and it has built such a great classroom community while also mastering their own math skills.
If I am able to purchase the IXL Math program for my students, I will be able to measure their mastery in each of our Florida BEST Math Standards. For each child, I am able to pull up a report per skill and see how many correct and incorrect answers they input. This helps me to identify student needs in my classroom, I then use this information to pull small groups of students to remediate. After remediation, students can practice the skill again to show mastery of the skill they were originally struggling with. Or they can go back to 4th or 3rd grade level skills to build a stronger math foundation to be successful in 5th. This will help to improve my ability to be able to target who is in need of remediation and be able to quicky to remediate. I can also use this information to target students who are quickly mastering skills and challenge them with more problem solving or higher level skills. This will also help to get my students excited to learn and practice all 5th grade math skills as they work towards spins or basketball shots. They are excited and invested in their own learning and growth!
The use of these funds will be for 50 student subscriptions. Each student subscription includes access to all math standards and skills from Pre-K through Calculus. I am able to allow every one of my students access to this program both at school as well as at home. This subscription is for a full year, so students are able to access their IXL account from both school and home as well as during all school breaks including summer.
