Students with autism often struggle with interpreting social cues, initiating and maintaining conversations, and understanding group dynamics. These challenges can hinder academic success and peer relationships. Our school currently lacks a consistent, engaging, and evidence-based tool to address these needs. The Social Express offers a solution that aligns with IDEA goals and supports IEP implementation.

Project Description

This proposal seeks funding to implement The Social Express, a research-based, interactive program designed to support students with autism in developing essential social skills. The program uses animated webisodes and customizable lessons to teach skills such as emotional recognition, conversation initiation, and conflict resolution. Funding will enable access to the platform, professional development for staff, and integration into Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Expected Outcomes

Students with autism will experience measurable improvements in their ability to understand and navigate social situations. Specifically, they will:
Develop stronger emotional recognition and self-regulation skills.
Improve conversation initiation, turn-taking, and active listening.
Gain confidence in peer interactions and group participation.
Experience reduced social anxiety and increased classroom engagement.
Show progress toward IEP social-emotional goals.
The Social Express program provides engaging, animated lessons that simulate real-life scenarios, making abstract social concepts more accessible and relatable for students with autism. I will measure this by doing the following:
Pre- and Post-Program Assessments

Social Skills Improvement System (SSIS)
Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF)
Teacher and parent surveys
Progress Monitoring via The Social Express Platform

Built-in quizzes and lesson completion tracking
Student engagement metrics and usage reports
IEP Goal Tracking

Regular documentation of progress toward individualized social-emotional goals
Observational data from teachers and support staff
Student Self-Reflections

Journals, check-ins, or visual rating scales to capture student perceptions of their own growth
Peer and Teacher Feedback

Anecdotal records and structured feedback forms to assess changes in peer interactions and classroom behavior

Purpose of Funding

The grant funds will be used to purchase licenses for Social Express, a research-based, interactive program designed to support students with social-emotional needs. This program aligns with our district’s goals of improving student engagement, emotional regulation, and peer interaction, particularly for students with disabilities and those receiving Exceptional Student Education (ESE) services.
By funding Social Express, we aim to provide equitable access to high-quality instruction, reduce behavioral incidents, and foster inclusive learning environments for all students.
