My goal is to create multiple murals around the campus of the habitats of Southwest Florida in our school hallway to both celebrate our unique environment and bring art to life for students. This project will be completed with the help of students in my after-school enrichment classes, giving them the opportunity to actively participate in designing and painting the mural. Together, we will research and highlight the plants and animals that make our community special while inspiring pride, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for the importance of protecting these habitats.

Project Description

This project will involve creating a large mural in our school hallway that represents the unique habitats, plants, and animals of Southwest Florida. Students in my after-school enrichment classes will actively participate in the design and painting process. They will research local wildlife, sketch ideas, and work collaboratively to bring the mural to life. The project will not only brighten our school environment but also provide students with hands-on experience in teamwork, creativity, and environmental awareness.
Our mural will meet the needs of students by offering them a creative outlet that connects directly to their community and environment. It encourages collaboration, problem-solving, and pride in their work, while reinforcing the value of the natural habitats around us. For the classroom, it provides a cross-curricular learning experience that ties together art, science, and environmental stewardship. For the school, the mural will serve as a lasting visual reminder of our commitment to creativity, education, and community pride, making our shared space more welcoming and inspiring.

Expected Outcomes

Through this project, students will gain confidence in their artistic abilities, improve their teamwork and problem-solving skills, and develop a stronger appreciation for the environment of Southwest Florida. By taking part in the design and painting process, they will also experience the pride of seeing their work displayed in a public space, which builds ownership, responsibility, and school community spirit.
Outcomes will be measured through student participation and engagement during the after-school enrichment sessions, as well as through reflective discussions and feedback from the students about what they learned. Success can also be seen in the completion of the mural itself, the collaboration demonstrated throughout the process, and the sense of pride and excitement students express when the project is unveiled to the school community.

Purpose of Funding

The grant funds will be used to purchase wood panels, primer, acrylic paints, and paint pens to create a durable and vibrant mural installation. By using wood panels, the mural can be painted flat during after-school enrichment sessions, allowing students to work comfortably from all angles without crowding each other. Once completed, the panels will be installed in the school hallway and can be removed or relocated if needed. Primer will ensure a strong, lasting base coat, while high-quality acrylic paints will provide bright, long-lasting color. Paint pens will allow students to add detail and definition, giving the mural both durability and artistic depth. These materials directly align with the submitted items to be purchased and will ensure a professional, lasting mural that showcases student creativity and pride.
